Richard Packer started Rationale out of his own desperation to find skin care for his own sensitive skin. At the age of 25 Richard found a combination of hereditary poor skin genes and outdoor activities took were taking their toll on Richard’s appearance, through his own quest for better skin he educated himself and developed the Rationale Skin Care range.

// How did you get your start in the industry?
I began my career in beauty as an editorial makeup artist. During this time I observed the gift of confidence afforded to models and actors born with beautiful skin. Conversely, people with skin problems almost always suffered from low self-esteem. I was not born with great skin genes so I understood this first hand. I always had a scientific interest in skincare and makeup, and this is what drove me to research the world of medical dermatology, and what this could bring to modern beauty. What began as a personal thirst for knowledge and answers led to the launch of Rationale in 1990. Over the years we have been blessed to have the support of some of the world’s leading dermatologists and plastic surgeons.

// Does Rationale have a signature look or style that it’s known for?
Rationale is known for our trademark luminosity. You can see it on women everywhere, from newsreaders and celebrities to professional women and stay at home mothers.
A clean, glowing face always looks youthful and vibrant. Always beautiful.
Our approach to makeup is minimal, drawing attention to the woman, not the products she’s wearing.
Coco Chanel understood this concept in dressing women at a time when women were beginning to demand freedom and respect as rational individuals rather than adornments.

// What was one of your biggest career challenges you’ve faced and how did you overcome them?
In the past 20 years medical dermatology and beauty have merged and we have been blessed to be at the forefront of this revolution. I quickly realised that I would need to re-train as a dermatologic chemist and formulator we were to create skincare products based on the latest medical research. At the time, there was no course of study in Australia, so I trained in the UK and the US. Discipling my self to master the scientific rigours of medical dermatology and pharmacology was difficult, it’s like learning a new language. But I knew my purpose, and eventually I achieved the research and development skills I needed to make Rationale a world-leading cosmeceutical.

// Must have product for you?
Makeup artists everywhere are embracing the Rationale Essential Six as the foundation of youthful luminosity. All six products work synergistically to reactivate the healthy glow of youth. Some of the world’s leading makeup artists carry the Essential Six and use it on all of their clients. Makeup artists are very important to us, as many celebrities now use Rationale on the recommendation and visible results achieved by their MUA’s.

// Who are the role models who have inspired you?
Throughout my career I have been incredibly supported by many outstanding dermatologists and plastic surgeons. They have always been so generous in sharing their medical knowledge and embracing Rationale and our contemporary take on beauty. In particular, I owe so much to a Melbourne dermatologist who encouraged me in my studies and in launching Rationale. She would not want me to name her, but she knows who she is.

// What's the next big trend you're starting to see sneak in?
Superfluid Sunscreens! These multitasking skincare-makeup formulations feel like water on the  skin, deliver SPF’s well over 100 and impart a luminous glow.
