// Marie Cocciolone has worked in the industry for 25 years and recently embarked on a new project, with her expertise in skincare Marie launched O Cosmedics a new ‘cosmedical’ range of skincare available through beauty salons nationally. She spoke to BTL about journey here.

// How did you get your start in the industry?
I completed my HSC thinking a career in medicine or law would be my thing, that was until I walked up the stairs of a career market expo and came face to face with Beauty Therapy. To be honest I really had no idea what it even was before that moment. My skin wasn’t great hence my personal interest was ignited. The more I researched the more intrigued I became. I loved the idea of working with people and transforming their life through their skin. I completed my Health Science Diploma, worked as a beauty therapist and soon after scored my first national role. From my first flight I was hooked! I loved (still do) visiting clinics and individual dreams and through this, over a number of years, I clearly recognised how a great distributor operated while at the same time what an ageing population refusing to age required from their daily skincare regime, this was the birth of O Cosmedics.

Does O Cosmedics have a signature look or style that you are known for?
Imagine this scene, you are at a bar and a drop dead gorgeous person walks in, your jaw drops, you are mesmerised, you work up the courage to go and say hi and start a conversation but soon realise they are all beauty and no brains, unable to hold an intelligent conversation, not street wise, nor funny… Kind of a letdown, you could say. I describe O Cosmedics as that jaw dropper except when O opens its mouth it’s got the brains too! O Cosmedics walks the talk, it’s a stylish brand (made in Australia, styled by Italians) that is able to transform skins and return it to skin health.

What was one of your biggest career challenges and how did you overcome it?
Without a doubt creating a brand that stands in a category of its own, ‘Cosmedical’. Whilst the term is not yet dictionary listed, it is a phrase we coined to highlight the evolution of cosmetics into the medical aesthetic arena. O Cosmedics guarantees to use every one of its active ingredients at the percentage recommended by manufacturers, the maximum recommended dose. As a result the actives are potent enough to stimulate a cellular response and in turn may cause the skin to tingle, feel warm, show redness, feel dry and sometimes even look older. Using a “drip-feed” approach the cell receptors acclimatise, accept and utilise the active ingredients and push out old, redundant cells ensuring cell optimisation, normal skin function, skin health and ultimately skin youth.To overcome this challenge we had to change the way skin/dermal experts treat and recommend. Our strategic solution was focused on education and a level of unlearning, teaching experts less is best, to wake up different skin cells at different times (days or weeks apart) and to check in often with their patients to ensure a smooth skin transition. The good news is our training worked and we have been transforming skins ever since.

Must have tool or products for your kit?
As I age the list grows. Absolute must haves for anti-aging would include Hyaluronic Acid; an internal cell hydrator as found in abundance in our Pure Age Defiance Serum, encapsulated Vitamin A (Retinol) still the number one anti-aging vitamin, O Cosmedics has two strengths Potent Retinol Serum 0.5% and Retinol Concentrate 1%, any active ingredient that supports collagen synthesis such as Vitamin C found in our Pure C + BHA and Trylagen found in our B3 Plus Serum. You can’t go past Eye Fusion either, a two-product-in-one approach to line free, plump and youthful eyes! The key is layering of products that support different skin cells and their actions to ensure all cells are working to full capacity. At O Cosmedics we refuse to allow cells to go into any form of early retirement, maintaining youth depends on them staying on the job.

Who are the role models who have inspired you?
Without a doubt my clinic partners, my INSKIN COSMEDICS team and the general public; ultimately they all fall under one category, the consumer. People know what they want, they are savvy, well read and aging by the day. If you take the time to listen the answers are all there. Sometimes they may not be able to tell you what they want however they are adamant about what they don’t want. This makes it easy for me to develop O Cosmedics in line with international trends and movements. 

What's the next big trend you're starting to see sneak in? 
Natural Cosmetics, as in natural makeup. (Skin Care) Foundations, Primers and colour makeup that are an extension of skincare, a continuation of clean, Cosmedical, chemical free skincare. Natural Cosmetics are not organic or mineral rather natural ingredients that have binned all the nasties and added functional actives that can treat the skin to ensure makeup is working for the skin and not against. Often we struggle to treat challenged skins only to find the cause is actually their chemical fuelled makeup. Clean, natural cosmetics is next generation makeup and without a doubt the best extension to skincare we have seen to date.

What do you enjoy to do when the brushes are down?
Family, friends, travel, social media, a not for the faint hearted cocktail, a good red, a regular massage and of course a good skin workout to keep those cells top of their game!
